Through seven games, the defense has been in sub -- with one or two extra defensive backs -- almost 50 percent of the time. The personnel within the sub packages has varied. Sometimes, the Patriots have played with an extra cornerback. Other times, like the most recent game against the Buccaneers, they've added an extra safety.
