Friday, October 30, 2009 When Pedro Martinez was considering signing with the Phillies during this season, he asked his mother Leopoldina for permission to play again. She agreed, but Leopoldina made her son promise that he would retire if the Phillies won the World Series. After Martinez pitched seven shutout innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS, Martinez joked that perhaps he would have to have another discussion with Leopoldina about playing next season.
