A couple of months ago I read Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers. At the risk of oversimplifying it, it's about the unusual or unexpected factors in life that set up one person for success and another for failure. He's got lots of examples in there about how being from a certain ethnic or religious background or being born in a certain year can set you up for success in a particular field.
