Fognini upsets Almagro in second round

BUCHAREST, Romania -- Fabio Fognini of Italy upset second-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-4, 7-6 (3) Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the BCR Open Romania. Fognini will play fifth-seeded Albert Montanes, who defeated Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-3 in an all-Spanish match. Santiago Ventura advanced when Alberto Martin retired with a left leg injury when leading 5-4 in another second-round match.
