But he became a batting pioneer of sorts Saturday, when he became the first major league baseball player to step up to the plate wearing the new Rawlings S100, a batting helmet that can withstand the impact of a 100 mph pitch -- a major improvement over the 70 mph protection provided by Rawlings' current MLB helmets.
