Tuesday, June 30, 2009 The Chicago Cubs will announce that right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa and will go into the bullpen, replacing right-handed pitcher Jose Ascanio, according to a league source. Samardzija has been starting at Iowa, and he's done well, adding a more effective slider to his repertoire of a fastball and a split-finger pitch. The move will be announced before tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ascanio will be optioned back to Iowa. Activate your ESPN Profile!
