A starter his entire pro career, Parnell, two months into his first full season as a big league pitcher, finds himself as the primary set-up man to Francisco Rodriguez. J.J. Putz is expected to be out eight to 10 weeks for surgery to repair a bone spur in his elbow, but Parnell had supplanted Putz in the eighth even before that news broke.
