My friend Bill Hailey and I recently went out to enjoy a day of wildlife watching in east Arkansas. Our plans quickly changed, however, when I found freshly sprouting pokeweed on a woodland edge. Most folks consider pokeweed nothing more than its name suggests: just a weed. The dark purple berries, root and purplish-stemmed, fully grown plants are poisonous.
