Friday, April 24, 2009 BERN, Switzerland -- Tournament favorites Russia and Canada posted convincing victories on the opening day of the ice hockey world championship on Friday. Defending champion Russia beat Germany 5-0, and Canada, silver medalists a year ago, downed Belarus 6-1 in Zurich with Steve Stamkos and Dany Heatley each scoring twice. Also, host Switzerland edged France 1-0 in a tense affair, and Slovakia got a late goal for a 4-3 win against Hungary, outsiders in the 16-nation tournament. Russia scored ...
