Monday, February 9, 2009 PATTAYA, Thailand -- Fifth-seeded Peng Shuai of China reached the second round of the Pattaya Open on Monday when Mara Santangelo of Italy retired with an ankle injury despite leading. Peng won 3-6, 5-2 after Santangelo injured her ankle while attempting to hit a backhand in the third game of the second set. She called for a trainer and completed four more games before retiring. Australian Open junior champion Ksenia Pervak of Russia also advanced, beating Tomoko Yonemura of Japan 6-1, 6-1. ... Activate your ESPN Profile!
