In chronicling the life and death of the 2004 Cubs for his new book, Cubs Nation, senior writer Gene Wojciechowski didn't spend the season just with Dusty Baker, Kerry Wood, Greg Maddux and the rest of the combustible crew. He also spent it among those who live and die with them.
