Dibs are up. Loveland and Arapahoe Basin are officially the first two resorts to open in North America. On October 15, 2008, each resort reported an 18-inch base for the day, with both operating just one lift. For the previous two years, A-Basin has been the reigning opening-day champ. But Loveland went on the offensive this season and pushed their opening date forward, not wanting them to take a third title: at least a tie is better than second place.
