Interesting note to start the column this week: Prior to becoming the John Deere Classic in 1999, the heartland-based tournament began in 1972 as the Quad Cities Open, then became, in succession, the Ed McMahon-Jaycees Quad City Open, Quad Cities Open (again), Miller High Life Quad Cities Open, Lite Quad Cities Open, Hardee's Golf Classic and Quad City Classic.
