Why do Americans care only about football, baseball and basketball?

I was in a hotel room in Prague a few weeks ago, watching a Czech-language broadcast of a sport I did not know existed. A dozen men stood on a basketball court that appeared to have been fingerpainted by aliens, chasing after an orb that looked like smaller version of a Nerf soccer ball.
