OEIRAS, Portugal -- Fifth-seeded Gilles Simon defeated Roko Karanusic 7-5, 7-5 on Monday to advance to the second round of the clay-court Estoril Open. In other first-round matches, seventh-seeded Marc Gicquel ousted Boris Pashanski 6-4, 6-3 and Teimuraz Gabashvili defeated Florian Mayer 7-5, 7-5. Fernando Gil and Ivo Minar also won.
