For the 2008 season, the Arena Football League added two new rules that were seemingly designed to make defense more of a factor. First, the Jack linebacker now has "freedom of movement" and can roam from sideboard to sideboard within five yards of the line of scrimmage once a play begins. Second, one defensive player is allowed to have a radio device in his helmet in order to communicate with the coaching staff.
