"We're number 16 for departure" is not something you want to hear at the start of an 8-hour flight. It's the kind of thing that gets you reaching for the Ambien and in-flight-a-zine for tips on fidget-fighting while the woman next to you changes her socks and speaks to you in Norwegian. Smiling and nodding, I made it through, and six hours later, at 5 a.m. New York time, I sat down for a lovely reindeer Bolognese at the hotel, on my way to fulfilling a desire for a reindeer-only diet on my trip ...
