Hawaii desperately tried to beef up its nonconference slate but got no takers. The Warriors eventually settled for two Division I-AA teams (Northern Colorado and Charleston Southern), a struggling Mountain West squad (UNLV) and a Pac-10 school (Washington) that at first seemed like a BCS résumé booster but has since backslid.
