Page 2 Wednesday, August 15, 2007 In 1991, San Francisco 49ers owner Ed DeBartolo and team president Carmen Policy held a press conference where they announced, among other things, that the team would have a new helmet design. Fan response was swift, and not particularly pleasant. The very next day, the team issued a statement that essentially amounted to, "Um, never mind," and the new helmet was quietly withdrawn (although it was later immortalized as a mini-helmet toy).
