Saturday, August 5, 2006 A BMX Big Air competitor soars gracefully over the 50-foot gap and warps up the 27-foot quarterpipe before the run starts to look dicey. He drifts backward as he re-enters the ramp and his back wheel slides out, whipping him furiously against the transition. The viewers groan so loudly you'd think they were close enough to feel the impact. But they're not. Are you crazy? It's nearly 100 degrees outside.
