BASSMASTER Magazine, May 2006 Monday, April 24, 2006 The scientific angle The Waterdog/Necturus maculosus (Pronounced neck"toor"us mack"you"low"sis) Waterdogs, often called mud puppies, are found from southern central Canada to eastern Quebec, in addition to the central, eastern and southern states of the U.S. They're totally aquatic. Adult waterdogs will grow from 8 to 13 inches and are actually neotenic or "permanent larvae."
