Of all the 20th- and 21st-century presidents, only LBJ seemed disinterested in sports; some, like Ike and Gerald Ford, excelled at a very high level. So George W. Bush and John Kerry aren't the first politicos to try to win hearts and minds by courting the votes of sports fans and participants.
