Saturday, July 17, 2004 NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario -- With a labor dispute threatening to postpone the NHL season, several star players were selected in the World Hockey Association's free agent draft Saturday. The WHA, a revival of a league by the same name that merged with the NHL in 1979, has plans for a 76-game schedule beginning Oct. 29, but it isn't clear whether its eight franchises will be operational by then.
