Special to ESPN.com Tuesday, May 18, 2004 This Thursday, I will tee it up in White Plains, N.Y., as one of 8,726 golfers playing to qualify for this year's U.S. Open. It's a two-stage qualifying process for most aspirants. Play 18 holes, shoot around par, and hope it's good enough to get to the second and final stage of qualifying. If that happens, then it's 36 holes in one day, shoot real low and qualify to play at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in June. I will never qualify for the U.S. Open.
