First, he needed the opportunity to close for woeful Detroit, and he hadn't gotten it. Matt Anderson began the year as the closer, which is meaningless when there's nothing to close. Then a guy named Chris Spurling got a save. Steve Sparks did, too. But no German. Maybe that's because of the second issue, which is walks. German has 22 of them in 21.2 innings.
