In praise of squirrels

If DNR number crunchers are correct, the opening Saturday of Minnesota's squirrel hunting season will come and go largely unnoticed. Shoppers at Mall of America on Sept. 14 may outnumber squirrel hunters with fewer than 30,000 in the woods. According to DNR hunter surveys, the number of squirrel hunters in the state has declined by 30 to 40 percent during the last 15 years.
