The tournament began in 1938 as the Greater New Orleans Open Invitational, becoming the First NBC New Orleans Open in 1975, the USF&G New Orleans Open in 1981, the USF&G Classic in 1982, the Freeport-McMoran Classic in 1992, the Freeport-McDermott Classic in 1996 and the Compaq Classic of New Orleans in 1999.
