Joel Bell: Fired by Michael Beasley

September 15, 2008 6:00 PM

This morning in the First Cup I linked to a report that Michael Beasley had fired his agent. And then that report was strongly refuted by someone close to Beasley.

Today the Players' Association tells the Sun-Sentinel's Ira Winderman that in fact the papers were filed severing ties with Bell last Wednesday.

I have heard a lot of speculation as to why, from the lack of a shoe deal (don't forget Beasley is tight with Kevin "Nike Bucks" Durant) to a general lack of direction in the Beasley camp.

I'll tell you what I don't like about this, if I'm a Beasley fan: The NBA lifestyle is a hurricane that throws even some of the most stable individuals off track. The money, the spotlight, the pressure, the free time, the opposition ... we're not in Kansas (State) anymore.

This summer would be a great time for Beasley to start putting down some roots. He's been drifting for a long time. From school to school, from house to house.

Love to see him getting as stable as possible.

Instead, before he even sinks his first NBA jumper, Beasley has already touched off big upheaval in his off-court regime. And it's not just Bell. Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski, who broke the story, has sources saying Beasley has even stopped talking to his longtime mentor and AAU coach, Curtis Malone. Malone was at Beasley's table just a few months ago in the green room at the NBA draft.
