Warriors' Big Offer to Elton Brand

July 2, 2008 4:53 PM

Janny Hu of the San Francisco Chronicle:

Flush with cap space after Davis' sudden exit, the Warriors have offered free agent Elton Brand a five-year deal worth between $85 and $90 million, according to league sources. ...

The Clippers had offered Brand is a five-year deal worth about $70 million - about $20 million less than the Warriors.

Brand, who had been close to re-signing with the Clippers, is expected to make a decision today.

It's a hot move, at least in terms of pure machismo. If I were a Warriors fan, I would be a little jazzed by the attempt to stick it right back in the eye of the Clippers.

It's almost certainly for naught, however.

ESPN's Marc Stein reported something similar last night, with a source saying that Brand has already turned down a big Golden State offer:

Golden State's immediate response was to make a lucrative offer to former Warriors guard Gilbert Arenas believed to be worth around $100 million over five seasons. But Arenas' return to the Washington Wizards is considered a virtual certainty around the league, as suggested by Antawn Jamison's comments Tuesday afternoon on ESPNEWS to discuss his own new contract with the Wizards for an estimated $50 million over the next four seasons.

"With Gilbert coming back and Gilbert being 100 percent healthy," Jamison said, "we are one of the most dangerous teams in the NBA."

One source said the Warriors then made a lucrative but unsuccessful free-agent pitch to Brand on Tuesday as opposed to resuming talks with Davis.

The most interesting thing about this whole deal is that Stein and others have quoted Baron Davis's agent saying that when they decided to opt out, they did so expecting that would be a way to get a better offer from the Warriors. Yet they have heard nothing at all.
