Tough Day for Those With Non-Guaranteed Contracts

January 7, 2008 9:54 AM

If you are playing in the NBA with a non-guaranteed contract, today is the most nervous day of the season -- and Thursday is one of the best.

That's because according to the NBA collective bargaining agreement anyone who is on an NBA roster, or has not yet cleared waivers, as of this Thursday has his contract fully guaranteed through the end of the season.

Which means that if a team is not serious about keeping you, or might want a roster spot or some cap room, they have until 6 pm ET today to let you go without having to pay you all season. Then players will spend 48 hours on waivers, and would be free and clear as of Thursday.

With this in mind, the Nuggets have already waived Bobby Jones, and the Warriors have already waived DJ Mbenga.

Many players with non-guaranteed contracts (Jamario Moon, for instance) have nothing to worry about, but some, like Coby Karl and Joel Anthony, will be sweating until the day is done.

The Lakers and Heat are over the luxury tax, which only increases the team's incentive to kiss the contract goodbye. Coby Karl and Joel Anthony each make the rookie minimum of $427,163. However, the collective bargaining agreement dicates that rookies and one-year veteran free agents count $770,610 (two-year veteran minimum) toward the luxury tax. The bottom-line difference between keeping them and letting them go is well into the six-figures.

With the help of ESPN, we have put together a list of NBA players with non-guaranteed contracts.
