Devin Harris Gets a Five Year Contract Extension

September 12, 2007 5:16 PM

I am a Devin Harris fan. He is super fast, but he also seems to know how to move with or without the ball to get buckets. He even plays D!

And now he has a lot of money and another five years on his contract. (Via Mavs Moneyball) I didn't even know they were in discussions!

The Spurs, famously, offer long, large contracts to their three best players. And no one else.

That's not how the Mavericks roll. With this contract the team has an unbelievable seven players under contract into 2011 or beyond, and all but one are on course to make more than $4 million that season. Four, or possibly five (depending on Harris's deal) will make more than $10 million.

A whole bunch of money, promised now, for 2011! That's four years away. Four years ago the Pacers were the best team in the East, the Timberwolves were the best team in the West. My point: it's just hard to project that far. And there's nothing worse, in the NBA, than having a large, long contract for a player who falls a little short of expectations. (Plenty of people would love to have Jason Terry. But Jason Terry for something close to $50 million? Fewer takers for sure.) Those contracts are practically untradable, and if the players aren't awesome, they can doom you to mediocrity.

Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs, Devin Harris
