TrueHoop Blogger Live Draft

June 29, 2007 3:52 AM

This is Jeff Clark from CelticsBlog.com and I'll be your host for this Blogger Live Draft.

These thoughts come to you from the blood and guts of each team's fans. We bloggers eat, drink, and breathe this stuff. Then we pour out our souls online. Hope you enjoy our words.

Here we go, this is how we roll!

1 Portland Henry Abbott TrueHoop.com

Prediction: I do not believe that Kevin Durant is a risky pick. He might be the best possible pick. But I'll take Greg Oden because I understand clearly how this team develops now. Oden + Roy + Aldridge + Kevin Pritchard = a feeling like Christmas.

Reaction: Please, big Greg, be greedy. We don't just want one or two rings out of this deal.

2 Seattle Paul Merrill Supersonicsoul.com

Prediction: The people of Seattle line the streets to hail the franchise saving teen sensation. Meanwhile, somewhere in the distance, the faint sobs of Bob Hill can be heard.

Reaction: "Sonic fans let out sigh of relief when Sam Presti ignores Rick Sund's advice and passes on the 13-year-old 7-footer from Zaire.

3 Atlanta Matt hotlantahawks.blogspot.com

Prediction: Dang, I was hoping Durant would fall. I want Mike Conley, Jr., Billy Knight wants Al Horford, Hawks ownership wants Yi, and Belkin wants to ruin the franchise. My money's on Horford.

Reaction: Billy Knight likes big butts and he cannot lie. Horford has the size to play center and will fit perfectly in the Hawks up tempo offense. With Josh Smith and Horford protecting the rim, I dub them the Swat Team.

4 Memphis Jason Gurney ballhype.com

Prediction: New GM Chris Wallace said earlier this week that he's prioritizing talent over need, but no need to debate it--Mike Conley Jr. is the best choice on both fronts.

Reaction: Good news for Grizzlies fans--Hollinger's #3 college guy is a big upgrade at a key position, and he becomes the new face of the franchise if Pau is traded.

5 Boston Jeff Clark CelticsBlog.com

Prediction: Katz says I should predict Ray Allen here. If they take Jeff Green, its a done deal.

Reaction: Jesus Shuttlesworth!!! Oh yeah, and that Jeff Green guy gets to wear a Celtic green hat for a few minutes, then trade it in for a Sonic green hat.

6 Milwaukee Brian yaysports.com

Prediction: The Bucks should take Yi Jianlian, a player whom I have never consciously nor specifically watched, and cannot be even sure exists, and who will not go to MIL, and not only that, but I heard that he writes run-on sentences that go on and on without ever saying anything, and after people read them they think "why did I let this jerk into my ESPN DOT COM thing that I'm doing when I know he's an idiot," and then they also think during the end of the run-on sentence, "I'll bet he is already starting work on his sentence for the #10 pick for the Kings, who also have a website that says DOT COM and I'll bet he was the guy who was smart enough to register dotcom DOT COM while not having any idea what to do with it.

Reaction: Who is this tall Spanish person?

7 Minnesota Brian Spencer emptythebench.com

Prediction: A team short on winners, Minnesota can certainly use players with a
championship pedigree. While the wiry Brewer will go through a rough
transition period initially especially in his offensive game he's a
tenacious lock-down defender on the perimeter who will do whatever it takes
to win

Reaction: Brewer represents a major upgrade in both respects and will give Foye a much-needed hand outside.

8 Charlotte Serena Hays mvn.com/nba-bobcats

Prediction: My money is on Brandan Wright. MJ has a thing for UNC players and Wright could be a great backup for Emeka Okafor.

Reaction: Ok, so I was really hoping we could get Corey Brewer, but I knew Minnesota would take him. Bobcats fans should be happy with the pick of Brandan Wright because he brings more size to a small team and he will help get them to the next level.

9 Chicago Kolsky mvn.com/nba-bulls

Prediction: I'd still like to have seen a trade, but I have to believe the Bulls will grab Joakim Noah. They wanted him last year if he had come out, and that was with the #2 pick.

Reaction: I'm not thrilled, but I'm glad it's not Spencer Hawes. Noah doesn't provide the Bulls with the inside scoring they need, but he does fit in with their high-energy philosophy and hopefully has bigger hands than Tyson Chandler. And a great suit.

10 Sacramento Matthew Kitchen mvn.com/nba-belowtherim

Prediction: Because there isn't a PG worth taking at the ten and because Sacramento was last in the league in rebounding, they pretty much have to take Julian Wright or Al Thornton with Wright being the likely pick.

(Threadjack: Tom Ziller of SactownRoyalty also had these thoughts - Right now, I'm begging for the Kings to take anyone but Spencer Hawes. Seriously... Julian Wright, Al Thornton, Greg Oden's grandson... anyone. The fanbase will revolt, and I'm afraid.)

Reactions: Kitchen - Not the pick that any fan was hoping Sacramento would make with a number of other guys on the board. No seven footer should ever have to improve his rebounding. Doesn't the term "upside" usually end up meaning "bust."

Ziller - Big, white, and unathletic: Your Sacramento Kings. UGH.

11 Atlanta Matt hotlantahawks.blogspot.com

Prediction: Those Conley highlights killed me, but after taking Horford, Billy Knight should fulfill his promise to Acie Law and take him here. Anybody that outscores the opposing team by himself in crunch time of close games is a guy I want on my team.

Reaction: Acie Law IV, in addition to having a great basketball name, is a freaking stud. Don't let his point-heavy college numbers fool you, he did what it took to win at Texas A&M. The Hawks need him to run the point and he's going to do it with a vengeance. Good draft for Billy Knight. Suck it, Belkin!

12 Philadelphia Jon Burkett mvn.com/nba-76ers

Prediction: The Sixers were trying to trade up, so if anything was happening...it would be announced that they're drafting for somebody. Here at 12, the player is Al Thornton.

Reaction: Thornton was the best player available and will be a great complement to Andre Iguodala. The Sixers go for upside instead. Billy King does his Isiah Thomas impression.

13 New Orleans Kieth Dardis mvn.com/nba-hornets

Prediction: Hornets should pick Julian Wright, forward out of Kansas. He is very versatile as he can play either the power forward or small forward position providing many matchup problems for opposing defenses. Wright's long wingspan will certainly help out down low on the defensive end for David West and Tyson Chandler.

Reaction: Great pick by the Hornets. One of the most athletic players in this year's draft. He will make an impact immediately on both ends of the floor. The Hornets can definitely make the playoffs in 2008 if two things happen: The trio of big men in Tyson Chandler, David West, and now Julian Wright need to mesh together and Peja Stojakovic needs to stay healthy. The Hornets are now a much better team defensively bringing in Julian Wright.

14 L.A. Clippers Steve Perrin ClipsNation.com

Prediction: Al Thornton of Florida State is a great athlete and a great shooter (he made 45% of his three the last two years in college), and the Clippers desperately need both of those things. Probably the best FSU basketball player to hit the NBA since Clipper Sam Cassell.

Reaction: Wow! Thornton's stock seemed to be rising the last few weeks, and I didn't think he would be available here. In fact, the Clippers didn't even work him out, assuming he would be gone. He may be the best scoring forward in the draft outside of Durant, and that's saying a lot. He is a freak of an athlete, and has serious range on his jumper. What's not to like about this pick at the end of the lottery?

15 Detroit Natalie need4sheed.com

Prediction: Rodney Stuckey - PG/SG Eastern Washington - Just because Stuckey didn't go to a big-name school doesn't mean he doesn't have a big game. He is an instant offense type of guy that has been compared to Chauncey Billups, he would be a great fit for Detroit which is in need of a backup PG.

Reaction: The Pistons were high on Stuckey and Rodney was high on the Pistons. This kid is fast, strong and can create his own shot. His skill set will fit in well with the Pistons' offense.

16 Washington Mike Prada bulletsforever.com

Dear Billy King, Thank you for selecting Thaddeus Young. A complimentary fruit basket is awaiting you, courtesy the Bullets Forever community. Love, Bullets Forever

Prediction: ABC. Anyone but Crittenton. Give us Nick Young to potentially replace DeShawn Stevenson, or if they're really daring, take BF favorite Derrick Byars, who excelled in a Princeton offense at Vanderbilt and can defend with the best of them. Just don't take Crittenton, or my pillow won't be happy.

Reaction: DeShawn Stevenson might as well pack his bags. We're very happy right
about now.

17 New Jersey Thum Chee Hang netsophobia.wordpress.com

Prediction: I was/am still clinging to the hope of a Sean Williams and Nick Fazekas tandem, since there's rumors of the Nets trading the 17th pick to the Sixers for the 21st and 30th pick, but if there's no trade, there's still the good old mantra of "get the best talent available".

Reaction: ...and the best talent available is the Sean Williams, even if he does nothing except for blocking shots, it'll be good enough. I can sleep happy tonight, Nets + Williams = Adios, Jason Collins

18 Golden State Shailo goldenstateofmind.com

Prediction: THE YI MOVEMENT! Oh wait- the Bucks took Yi without even watching him play in person? What in the name of Zarko Cabarkapa is going on? Thaddeus Young gone too? Forget the #18 pick then. BRING KG TO THE BAY!. Julian Wright...

Reaction: Wow. This is somewhat of a shocker. Actually it is a shocker. I don't remember seeing any mock draft with the Warriors taking Marco Belinelli or any Warrior fan even mentioning his name. I'm thinking Nellie sees a little bit of himself in this cat- as in Marco Beli-Nellie. Flip Nelliebelly around and you have Belinelli. In Nellie we trust...

19 L.A. Lakers Austin Kent hoopsaddict.com

Prediction: Considering Kobe Bryant's most recent hissy-fit, I can't see the Lakers
taking a swingman to develop on the bench. They need to roll the dice and
hope to find somebody who can help them out immediately, before Kobe loses
his mind. I'll take the relatively proven, quality big man Josh McRoberts
and pray that Bryant likes him.

Reaction: The fact that Smush Parker ever started on a western conference playoff team is a complete joke. The Lakers must feel that Crittenton can come in and out-produce both him and Jordan Farmar. Help in the frontcourt would be nice, but this certainly doesn't hurt. Now we just cross our fingers and hope Kobe likes him.

(Threadjack: Don Landrigan from withmalice says "I was quite excited leading up to this pick - some real quality still available (due to some baffling picks earlier)! Javaris Crittendon has got tremendous upside with McKie & Parker gone, he should be able to have an impact immediately. Happy as a pig in the proverbial... Surprised to see Crittendon still on the boards at this later stage! A steal to get him at #19..." )

20 Miami Vivek Wallace mvn.com/nba-heat

Prediction: Amazing that after 19 picks there's still a handfull of impact players remaining. Based on the ones available, I see Gabe Pruitt PG being the most 'Riley-Ready'.

(Threadjack: Darren Heitner from sportsagentblog says - "The Lakers stole our man! The Heat are looking to upgrade the PF/C position with a dominant player who can score and be a defensive presence and (probably more importantly) need a young, talented point guard to feed the ball to Wade in the future. In the first round, I think they should address the lack of a small man and select Gabe Pruitt, who may be overrated at this slot, but fills a need.")

Reaction: (Wallace) Scratching my head here but who in their right mind questions Riley? Hopefully Jason Smith's trip to Miami this June means a trip to Orlando (Disney World), next June! Strap up...Here we go again fellas!

21 Philadelphia Jon Burkett mvn.com/nba-76ers

Prediction: All bets are off now. The Sixers have needs all over the place, but especially in the middle. It's hard to ignore Derrick Byars though. Billy King might go for some Duke love in Josh McRoberts...

Reaction: Daequan Cook? Billy King and Isiah are trying to one up each other.
Cook might be a good one. Trade?

22 Charlotte Serena Hays mvn.com/nba-bobcats

Prediction: The Bobcats addressed their Big Man need with the 8th pick, it's time to move on to a scorer. I hope MJ comes around and picks Morris Almond or Daequan Cook to address that need.

Reaction: Screw you Sixers! I wanted Cook for the Bobcats, but no such luck. And now we draft a forward. Why? We need a shooter, someone to play off of Felton at Guard. But they picked Jared Dudley. I'm stunned.

23 New York Seth Rosenthal postingandtoasting.com

Prediction: At this point, I'm buggin too much about the idea of Zach Randolph in orange and blue to really care. Morris Almond? Derrick Byars? Chef Boyardee? The guy from the FreeCreditReport.com commercials? Whatever.

Reaction: Wilson Chandler is the guy everyone expected the Knicks to get. He's definitely an Isiah Thomas kinda player. Doesn't really matter. I like DePaul's uniforms.

24 Phoenix Dan Hilton brightsideofthesun.com

Prediction: There are several guards still available and the Suns will probably be looking for a backup to Steve Nash. Gabe Pruitt may be the best pick for them although the rumor is they may trade the #24 pick.

(Threadjack: Matthew Kitchen from mvn.com/nba-suns - "The Suns haven't kept a drafted player in two years but after the post season, they need to look seriously at improving. Would like to see them take Alando Tucker, a steal much like Josh Howard four years ago, and then move Marion in a trade that brings in Garnett. With that and Grant Hill, the Suns win 70 games and I stop drinking every June")

(Threadjack 2: Henry from TrueHoop says - "Prediction: I'll take Rudy Fernandez, and leave him in Europe for a while because our roster is getting full. -- Reaction: Seems like every NBA team is trying to find their Manu Ginobili. Now Portland gets to take its shot without even giving up a friggin' pick. We have a standing order with Phoenix, I guess. This is, if you're made of cash, a cheaper way to get players than picking Ginobili with the 58th pick.")

25 Utah Aaron Lillie dailybasketball & utahjazzblog.net

Prediction: The Utah Jazz have to great scorers to consider with their #25 pick, both Derrick Byars and Morris Almond. Jazz GM Kevin O'Connor has repeatedly said that the team will take the best player available, and either player are have a wide array of offensive tools. Byars had dropped a few spots, and may have more defensive skills, but the team should get their three-point shooter and offensive scorer in either.

Reaction: The Jazz selected Almond, a player who has the offensive skills to contribute right away. He'll have the opportunity for the Jazz, and the team should be happy that one of the draft's top shooters fell to them.

26 Houston Brian yaysports.com

Prediction: Thank you Danny Ainge for destroying the Celtics! Who am I picking for?

(Threadsave because yaysports is delinquent - Don Landrigan from withmalice says "Aaron Brooks will do pretty well at Houston, where his lack of height should be offset to some extent by the mere presence of Yao. He has quite good vision, and wants the ball. I'm a little surprised that he got drafted at this point, I had him pegged for a mid-to-late second round choice - and especially given that Josh McRoberts is still on the board (who would do pretty well in a Rockets uniform). Still, Brooks should do ok in Houston, playing behind Alston & James.")

27 Detroit Natalie need4sheed.com

Prediction: Glen Davis PF LSU - Davis can overpower almost any player at his position. His physical strength and feel for the game will be complementary to the Detroit bigs. He needs to shed some weight to improve his mobility, but I see him doing well in Detroit's system.

Reaction: Wow, I wasn't expecting this pick. I really like Arron Afflalo, but I am surprised Detroit used a first-round pick for him. With choosing two guards in the draft it looks like the Pistons may be trying to move Flip Murray. Afflalo has a great perimeter shot and plays good D, whether he's going to crack Detroit's rotation is another thing.

28 San Antonio David Thiessen mvn.com/nba-spurs

Prediction: Derrick Byars is the perfect player for the Spurs. He can immediately step in as a back up small forward and shooting guard, providing an injection of youth, scoring and heady play. While not super athletic, he is a NBA ready player and a steal at 28.

Reaction: Splitter was the other player I thought they might take. San Antonio needs another big man, especially a young one to develop. He is already a good defender, understands the game well and has lottery talent. Unfortunately, we probably won't see him for at least another year because of his buyout clause. Here we go again.

29 Phoenix Dan Hilton brightsideofthesun.com

Prediction: Maybe here is where the Suns will pick a guard and keep the pick? Again I'm going to predict Gabe Pruitt. If I keep picking him, eventually he'll come to the Suns.

Reaction: The Suns picked Alando Tucker. Could he be a replacement for Shawn Marion?

30 Philadelphia Jon Burkett mvn.com/nba-76ers

Prediction: With their third pick of the first round, the Sixers can either trade it away, go for a foreign talent to stash overseas, or go for an experienced player to complement the guys they've added based on potential. Of course, let's see what Billy King has up his sleeve. I'd go with Byars or McRoberts for the steal.

Reaction: Koponen - future at point. Andre Miller is entering a contract year. I'm sure the Flyers can use him on the power play.

And that wraps up the first round of the NBA draft! Hope you enjoyed it. Please make sure you visit the blogs linked above in the coming days to get more in-depth analysis on each of these teams and picks.
