BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville is at the podium right now, and he said sophomore Kodi Burns would be the Tigers' starting quarterback if they were playing a game today.

Junior college transfer Chris Todd remains very much in the hunt, but Tuberville said it was difficult to evaluate him because he was only about 80 percent in spring practice with a sore throwing shoulder.

"He's ready to go now, so we're going to have good competition," Tuberville.

After about 10 days of preseason practice, Tuberville said the plan is to pick a starter and not let the whole quarterback thing fester into the season.

"We will have a true starter," Tuberville said. "That doesn't mean we won't play a second quarterback. ... We'll probably play several, but will have one starter."

Burns is the more athletic of the two and a dangerous runner, but hasn't shown he can consistently throw the ball. Tuberville thinks the new spread offense first-year offensive coordinator Tony Franklin has installed is "built" for a player like Burns.
