Garcia taking second-team snaps

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Chris Smelley will take his turn as South Carolina's starting quarterback against Vanderbilt, but it could get interesting if Steve Spurrier decides to or needs to go to a backup.

Tommy Beecher started the opener against North Carolina State last week, but threw four interceptions and injured his non-throwing shoulder. Beecher was limited this week in practice and only threw sparingly during pre-game warm-ups.

When the Gamecocks went through their team work right before they headed to the locker room for a final time, Smelley worked with the first team and redshirt freshman Stephen Garcia with the second team. Beecher didn't participate in the team work.

The Gamecocks only brought three quarterbacks on the trip, the third being Garcia.

So depending on what happens during the game (or how antsy Spurrier gets), we could see Garcia's debut tonight.

Spurrier, who played his high school football in Johnson City, Tenn., spent part of the day seeing the sights with his wife, Jerri. They took in the Country Music Hall of Fame as well as the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, of which Spurrier is a member. He was inducted in 2000.

As far as the weather, a steady rain was falling a few minutes ago, and the wind was blowing it sideways. But it looks like most of the rain has stopped now.
