UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel weighs in from Pac-10 media day.
On returning to college to coach and the Pac-10:
"I am elated to be here. It is a thrill to be back in college football. It is a thrill to be back at my alma mater. I know there's been a lot said about me over the last couple of years. It is what it is."
On his beleaguered offensive line:
"I remain optimistic there because of who we have coaching [Bob Palcic]. I believe we can get it done. The key will be to stay healthy."
On his QB situation:
"The quarterback situation is as follows: Pat Cowan is out for the year. Ben Olson is just out of a boot. The healing process is going as planned. He'll hopefully be at full-speed early on in camp. In the wings, we have Kevin Craft, a junior college transfer. He's shown some real leadership, especially in the summer months. All that being said, no excuses. We're going to play the quarterback position well."
On offensive coordinator Norm Chow:
"There's a great allure to Norm Chow. His resume gives him almost rock star status. I could not be any happier with the harmony that exists on our coaching staff."
How do you deal with the specter that is USC?
"I think you have to embrace. They are that elephant in the living room. They have earned it. They have done an unbelievable job. You can't be the head football coach at UCLA and not find a way to compete successfully with USC. You have to fight them on every corner."
