True freshman quarterback Emmanuel Yeager has decided to transfer due to a family issue, New Mexico coach Mike Locksley announced Tuesday.

Yeager, who arrived on campus in January, has been granted a release from his scholarship. He graduated early from Coolidge High School in Washington, D.C., and participated in spring drills at New Mexico.

"Emmanuel has a family issue and needs to be closer to home," Locksley said in a statement. "He and I have been in discussion about this over the past month and it was a tough decision for him to make, but I respect him for doing what's best for his family. While we hate to lose any player from our program, we wish him all the best in the future."

Yeager was part of a tight quarterbacking race between senior Donovan Porterie, junior Tate Smith, and sophomore Brad Gruner. The Lobos also have redshirt freshman B.R. Holbrook, and incoming freshman Darren Jones in the quarterbacking race.
