1. Third time's a charm?: Tulane is breaking in its third defensive coordinator in three seasons after O'Neill Gilbert was fired after just one year. In comes 14-year veteran Steve Stanard to help a defense, which ranked last nationally in tackles for loss, 113th against the run and 106th in scoring defense.

2. Tulane needs to be inspired: The season didn't go as Tulane had hoped last season and Toledo needs to keep encouraging his team if he wants more production this year. The Green Wave lost eight straight to end the year and allowed 41 or more points in six of those losses. They never had a lead in their final six games. There is talent on the Tulane roster, it just needs a little motivation to shine in 2009.

3. Looking for continuity: One of the main gripes from Toledo during spring practice was a lack of continuity especially when stars such as Andersen and receiver Jeremy Williams weren't on the field. During one of the scrimmages, Toledo expressed dismay over mistakes, including the receivers lining up wrong in various offensive sets.
