Sophomore Joe Kemp will be Tulane's new starting quarterback come fall camp.

Tulane coach Bob Toledo said Monday that Kemp beat out Kevin Moore, who was last season's starter and redshirt freshman Ryan Griffin. Moore and Griffin are listed second and third on the depth chart respectively.

Toledo had opened the quarterback competition at the beginning of spring drills after the team finished last season 2-10. The Green Wave finished 80th in the country in total offense and 112th in scoring offense last season.

"We charted them the whole spring in every drill," Toledo told the Times-Picayune. "And Joe was the most productive one.

"And then we looked at the intangibles, the athleticism, the ability to make plays. And after that, we decided to give Joe the chance first."

Kemp played in five games last season before suffering a broken collarbone after a late hit by Houston defensive end Phillip Hunt. He completed 26-of-46 passes for 344 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
