The series between in-state schools Marshall and West Virginia could end before it becomes a true rivalry.
According to an article in the Charleston Daily Mail, West Virginia will only continue the series if the Mountaineers get 2-for-1 games with the Thundering Herd, meaning that for every one game that's played in Huntington two will be played in Morgantown.
Marshall's goal is to make the series a home-at-home in the new contract.
The current contract, which was signed in 2005 and expires in 2012, called for four games in Morgantown and two in Huntington. The middle game in 2009 would be played at the school with the most wins in the first three games. West Virginia won the first three meetings and has won all eight of the meetings between the two teams since 1911. The 2006 game started the series that has been in hibernation for more than eight decades. Only one other game has been played between the two teams during that time (1997).
