Yet another day without a catchy theme, but a lot to catch up on from the weekend. There were scrimmages that were either celebrated or scrutinized. There were evaluations of spring practices as a whole and there were, of course, the ever popular stories about players trying to overcome odds, impress coaches and earn some playing time. I've got it all right here in one handy place.
• Walk-on quarterback Tate Smith might be a dark horse to earn New Mexico's starting job, but as long as the job remains open, Tate has a chance.
• BYU spring camp is over, but that doesn't mean the questions about BYU's football team were answered.
• Marshall coach Mark Snyder was encouraged by his defense on Saturday and discouraged by his offense. He's hoping at some point he'll find an even keel.
• The staff new San Diego State coach Brady Hoke assembled has received high marks around town, but the team hasn't played a game yet.
• Mountain West coaching salaries have been booming with the success of some of their programs, but San Diego State isn't willing to shell out a million dollars for a coach.
• Louisiana-Lafayette completed its spring drills and Joshua Parrott from the Advertiser breaks down what we learned.
