When Houston begins spring practice on March 24, receiver Patrick Edwards is expected to be with the team.

Edwards suffered a compound fracture in his right leg midway through the third quarter of the Cougars' 37-23 loss to Marshall on Oct. 28.

He will do non-contact drills with the team, but isn't ready to go full speed on the fracture that was repaired with a metal rod and pins. However, all indications are that he will return to the field during the 2009 season.

Edwards injured the leg while was attempting to catch a touchdown pass and crashed full speed into metal carts placed just outside the back of the end zone. The carts were used to carry equipment for the Marshall marching band. Edwards spent almost a week in a Huntington, W.Va., hospital.

Edwards was the team's leading receiver at the time of his injury. He finished the season with 46 catches for 634 yards and four touchdowns.
