Kenny Ingram has been promoted to take over as Memphis' defensive coordinator.

Ingram, who has coached the Tigers' linebackers the past three seasons, takes over for Tim Walton, who accepted a job with the Detroit Lions in February.

Memphis coach Tommy West said he interviewed three defensive assistants -- Ingram, Brent Pry and Lytrel Pollard -- and felt all were qualified for the job.

"Kenny has been with me the longest period of time and I feel that with him being at linebacker, he knows the front end and the back end," West said. "I am excited about naming him the coordinator."

West said he will hire another assistant to coach linebackers.
