Tulane hired Steve Stanard as its new defensive coordinator on Thursday to replace O'Neill Gilbert, who was fired last month after his second season with the team and first as the defensive coordinator.

Stanard was the defensive line coach at Ohio last season. He also was the defensive coordinator at Colorado State (2003-06) and New Mexico State (1999-2002).

"The experience that Steve brings is invaluable," Tulane coach Bob Toledo told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "And I also wanted someone who is loyal, trustworthy, would get along with coaches and the players and obviously had a knowledge and experience to run the defense. Steve comes from a great background with good mentors. He does what I want us to do on defense."

Last season, Ohio ranked in the top four in the Mid-American Conference in total defense, rushing defense, passing defense and passing defense efficiency. It ranked sixth in the MAC in scoring defense.
