SOUTH BEND -- Toward the end of his press conference, San Diego State coach Chuck Long was put into a tough situation. He was asked which team was better? Cal Poly or Notre Dame?

"That's a tough question," Long said. "Each week is different. It's hard to say who's better. They're two completely different schemes.... It's hard to say who's better, they both beat us."

While Long tap-danced around like Fred Astaire it was clear that he wasn't ready to anoint Notre Dame masters of the college football universe. That's OK, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis wasn't ready to either.
