Morning Coffee: CSU player sticks foot in mouth

Greeting from Charlotte.

I'm going to leave my hotel in about 30 minutes to head to Bank of America Stadium for the noon kickoff between East Carolina and Virginia Tech. But before I can do that, I thought I'd bring you some Morning Coffee for the opening Saturday of the season.

• Colorado State senior running back Gartrell Johnson is in a bit of hot water after going on television and encouraging fans to get drunk during Sunday's game against Colorado.

"We just want to get your guys' support and just come out and get drunk, talk [expletive] at CU fans and watch us kick their [expletive]. Go Rams," Johnson said at a pep rally on Friday.

• Idaho running back Deonte' Jackson rushed for 1,175 yards last season as a freshman, and expects better results this season as the season kicks off against Arizona.

• BYU faces Northern Iowa, one of the top teams in the FCS, today because Nevada broke its contract with the Cougars, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. Really, either would have been a test this year.

• The three running backs in Notre Dame's backfield aren't worried about sharing carries, Jeff Carroll of the South Bend Tribune reports. They think they complement each other.

• Could Army be headed for a quarterback change after one game? That's what Times Herald-Record reporter Sal Interdonato thinks after Army coach Stan Brock used sophomore quarterback Chip Bowden in the final minutes of Friday's loss to Temple.

• Jeffrey Martin of the Wichita Eagle chronicles North Texas quarterback Giovanni Vizza and his ascension to the starting quarterback role over head coach Todd Dodge's son, Riley.

• Air Force players say they are comfortable with both quarterbacks should coach Troy Calhoun choose to play two in today's opener against Southern Utah, the Colorado Springs Gazette reports.

• TCU is reveling in the fact that they don't have a superstar name this season, according to Mercedes Mayer of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Each player believes he is just one of 11 on the field.

• Utah has a must-win game against Michigan, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. The game sets the tone for the season and whether it can be a player on a larger stage.

• And the story that won't die: Texas is very aware of Florida Atlantic coach Howard Schnellenberger's comments earlier this month, but Texas coach Mack Brown doesn't seem to care because it's time to play the game. I still like Florida Atlantic to cover here.

Colorado State Rams, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Air Force Falcons, Utah Utes, Brigham Young Cougars, Florida Atlantic Owls, Army Black Knights, Idaho Vandals, North Texas Mean Green, Texas Christian Horned Frogs
