Morning Coffee: Sanford not going anywhere

Mmmmm, Non-BCS Morning Coffee tastes like heaven with a hint of the little black pebble in FieldTurf. Come get your links!

• For all of you UNLV fans hoping, wishing, praying for a coaching change, Ron Kantowski of the Las Vegas Sun has some bad news. UNLV is too strapped for cash to buy out the remaining year of coach Mike Sanford's contract, so it looks like mediocrity for two more seasons.

• Air Force coach Troy Calhoun drew on his baseball knowledge to explain his reasoning for choosing to platoon his quarterbacks. Does anyone else find it ironic that Air Force is using the word platoon as a football term? No? OK. I'll be over here.

• Ah, the harping on Notre Dame's cake schedule continues. Today, UHND.com took its 1,000-word turn on how easy the Irish schedule is this season as compared to past seasons. I walked this road last week and I'm trying not to trip down it again.

• If you haven't gotten your fill of preseason prognostication, I have one more poll for you, the blogger poll. Now, I'm a blogger, but I buy into all the blogging stereotypes. I do appreciate the fact that it seems to be a Michigan site and Michigan didn't crack the top 25. Take that, coaches!

• While New Mexico was dealing with Ricky Long contract and NCAA sanctions, TCU was dealing with New Mexico, the Horned Frogs' first opponent next week.

• In case you missed it, and I know I did (sorry Hilltoppers), K.J. Black was named the starting quarterback for Western Kentucky this season. Yes, Western Kentucky is a Division I-A team (FCS, whatever). It plays in the Sun Belt, but will be an independent this season.

• And last but not least... For all two of those Wyoming fans who keep getting on me for being down on the Cowboys, direct your e-mails to Austin Ward of the Rocky Mountain News.

"Wyoming made progress on offense, though it didn't take much. How much improvement the Cowboys made is up for interpretation."

Nevada-Las Vegas Rebels, Mike Sanford, Troy Calhoun, Air Force Falcons, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, New Mexico Lobos, Texas Christian Horned Frogs, Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, Wyoming Cowboys
