New Mexico State running back Seth Smith has left the team for personal reasons, according to the Las Cruces Sun-News.
Smith, a transfer from College of the Sequoias, worked with the team through spring practices, but only lasted a few days into fall camp after he fell to fourth on the depth chart.
Linebacker Wyatt Hogan, a junior-college transfer from Phoenix, also left the team.
Memphis has an announcement
I got a note that Memphis will be holding a press conference Thursday to announce something that "will receive national attention." I don't know what it is, but it could go a few different ways:
- Memphis is announcing a contract extension for coach Tommy West.
- Memphis is announcing NCAA violations for its program.
- Memphis is shutting the school down totally ashamed from the national championship last year.
That last one might be a stretch.
Dekker doing well
Air Force tight end Travis Dekker is healing after surgery on Monday to repair a fractured bone in his ankle. Dekker suffered the injury during a practice on Aug. 7. He is expected to miss six to eight weeks.
A few links while I'm here...
- Daniel Meager and Nathan Tune are fighting for the backup role behind North Texas starter Giovanni Vizza, Brett Vito of the Denton Record-Chronicle reports. Coach Todd Dodge is still hesitant to say that he's going to redshirt Riley, who has now dropped to fourth on the quarterback depth chart.
- Daryl Robinson, the highest profile local player recruited by third-year Temple football coach Al Golden, has left the team to attend West Hills Community College in Coalinga, Calif., according to Kevin Tatum at the Philadelphia Inquirer. Robinson, who played running back, wide receiver and kick returner, was Temple's second-leading rusher in his only season with 347 yards and was fourth in total offense with 621 yards.
- The Bleacher Report had an interesting article stating that Fresno State's tough nonconference schedule hurts more than it helps. I agree with this to an extent. Yes, Fresno Sate is bound to lose one of those games, but when and if realignment comes up in a few years, which schools are going to get the first look for a BCS conference? The ones that played Cake U or the one that took on three No. 1 teams this decade. It's all about the means justifying the ends.
- And here's where I give some love to the Hogs in the Hole... No O-line has been criticized more during the offseason than Notre Dame's and rightfully so. But because of this criticism, the linemen have developed chips on their shoulders and are looking to make amends... And from the other side of the country, Hawaii is playing musical chairs with its O-linemen, Stephen Tsai of the Honolulu Advertiser writes, in an attempt to find the right group to protect new quarterback Brent Rausch.
