FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News predicts newly signed New York Jets defensive back Ty Law will see significant action in sub packages Thursday night against the New England Patriots.
Law hasn't played in an NFL game in 11 months, but his chief responsibility could be stopping Patriots slotmeister Wes Welker.
"If he plays the slot, he'll have to cover Wes Welker, which would be a bad matchup for the Jets," Cimini writes in his blog, the Jets Stream.
| Wes Welker Yards After Catch | | QTR | REC | YDS | AVG | YAC | | 1 | 3 | 23 | 7.7 | 10 | | 2 | 2 | 40 | 20.0 | 17 | | 3 | 3 | 24 | 8.0 | 18 | | 4 | 2 | 20 | 10.0 | 15 | | Total | 10 | 107 | 10.7 | 60 | | |
Welker set an NFL record in Sunday's victory over the Buffalo Bills by catching at least six passes in each of the first nine games of a season. He's had at least six catches in 13 straight games.
The Bills moved starting cornerback Jabari Greer from the outside into the slot to shadow Welker, but it didn't help. Welker caught 10 passes for 107 yards, both season highs.
Matt Cassel has been firing quick darts to Welker, who gained 60 of his yards Sunday after the catch.
Welker is on pace for 117 receptions. His 66 catches are only one behind Andre Johnson for the NFL lead.
