GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Read his lips.
"Aaron Rodgers the starting quarterback of the Green Bay Packers. That's been stated over and over again. I hope you can finally understand that. That's where we are as an organization."
Those were the words of Packers coach Mike McCarthy, reiterating his position on the possible return of quarterback Brett Favre during a news conference Saturday afternoon at Lambeau Field. McCarthy said he does not know whether Favre will report to training camp this weekend, but reiterated that Rodgers will remain the starter regardless of Favre's next move. The Packers would likely put Favre through a physical if he reports, but beyond that McCarthy would not project what he would do with Favre during practice.
McCarthy had no further updates on the Packers' attempts to trade Favre -- the N.Y. Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have received permission to speak to gauge Favre's interest in joining their teams -- but admitted he is "disappointed" with how the summer-long drama has played out. He said the public is not aware of all the details regarding Favre's attempts to return and said training camp "can't happen soon enough."
Packers players are required to report to training camp Sunday by 7:30 a.m. CT. Practice begins Monday morning at 8:45 a.m.
We'll bring you more analysis as the day goes on but wanted to make sure you had the basics now.
