Report: Giants agree to terms with Phillips

Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that the New York Giants have agreed to terms with first-round draft pick Kenny Phillips of Miami. Profootballtalk.com first reported the story, and Garafolo said that Phillips, the No. 31 pick overall, will likely sign his contract Wednesday.

In the wake of Jeremy Shockey's departure and more sniping from wide receiver Plaxico Burress, the fact that Phillips won't miss any time in camp is especially good news for the Giants. New York brought in veteran Sammy Knight to replace last season's starting safety Gibril Wilson, but there's a good chance Phillips could win the job in training camp. GM Jerry Reese and the Giants coaching staff were thrilled with how Phillips looked during last month's minicamp.

Oh, and here's a complete transcript of the aforementioned Burress sniping. Burress, who is not pleased with his contract situation, told the Star-Ledger that he couldn't understand why the Giants waited so long to trade Jeremy Shockey. He thinks it could serve as a distraction for the team.

I'm sure Reese and head coach Tom Coughlin appreciate the feedback. Burress is planning to show up Thursday, but he basically called out management for being two-faced. Apparently they were smiling at him while refusing to budge during negotiations.

Burress wants Moss-T.O. money and the Daily News is reporting that the two sides are still a long way apart. I have a call into Giants captain Shaun O'Hara to discuss several of these matters.

Make sure you check back for my daily 2 a.m. post. Thanks and good night.
